Sam Bullard - Saxophone and Clarinet

Sam Bullard was born and raised in Colchester, Essex. As an extremely tall nine year old he chose to learn the saxophone mainly because no one else played it at his school. Soon after this he joined the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra and then moved to London aged eighteen to study at the Guildhall School of Music where he achieved a first class honours BMus degree in 2005. He studied under Tim Garland and Stan Sulzmann amongst others.

Sam first performed with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra in 2003 and now combines his role in the band with a wide range of freelance work. He has performed with the BBC Big Band, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Jazz Orchestra, the Delta Saxophone Quartet and worked in theatre orchestras such as the Guys and Dolls UK tour and Jersey Boys (London). He has also led his own jazz quartet at the 606 Jazz Club in London. He recorded for the 2007 BBC Three Television comedy series ‘Thieves Like Us’.

Sam is a founder member of the Heritage Orchestra, a large contemporary music ensemble. With them he has performed at the Barbican Hall (London Jazz Festival) and at the Miles Davis Hall (Montreux Jazz Festival), and has recorded for a BBC Radio One session and a commercially released album.
