Jon Stokes - Trombone

Jon grew up in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and began playing the trombone at the age of eleven with Mike Sallis as his teacher. Jon took an active role in many of the county’s amateur brass bands and orchestras and won places in the finals of both the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year and The Valve/Warwick Music Trombone Competition. In 2001 he went on to study with Mike Hext and Richard Edwards at the Royal College of Music. In 2005 he won an ‘Archers’ Scholarship to Trinity College of Music to study with Bobby Lamb.
Having recently graduated Jon is now enjoying his position with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra as well as pursuing a career as freelance musician in London. Despite being busy with the Orchestra Jon still performs regularly with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Heritage Orchestra and is a founding member of Majestic Brass and Zone One Brass. Jon has also played with the BBC Big Band, the Ted Heath Orchestra, and Jay Craig and His Orchestra. Furthermore Jon is heavily involved in education with the Philharmonia’s Elastic Band and Majestic Brass and many more projects up and down the country.
