Steve Blyth
Saxophone

Tenor sax, Flute, Clarinet and Bass clarinet with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra

Steve comes from the delightful seaside town of Blackpool, and has been playing saxophone, clarinet, flute and piano from a young age. After graduating from Huddersfield University with a MA Degree in Music, in 2002, he spent a few years working as a freelance musician. Steve then went to work for P&O Cruises for a couple of years in the showband onboard MV Oriana (and briefly MV Arcadia), where he travelled extensively around Europe and The Caribbean ,as well as two World Cruises, gaining valuable experience in many genres along the way.

On his return to land, he went on to tour around the UK and abroad with various musicals; ‘Annie’, ‘Starlight Express’, ‘The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas’, ‘Avenue Q’ and ‘The Glenn Miller Story Starring Tommy Steele’. In addition, Steve has also deputised regularly on many other UK tours, such as ‘Hairspray’, ‘White Christmas’, ‘Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert’, ‘Singin In The Rain’ and ‘Cabaret’.

Recently he also spent two months in Seoul (South Korea) with a Broadway cast of ‘Chicago: The Musical’, as well as two weeks in Taipei (Taiwan) with the same show.

Since first seeing the The Syd Lawrence Orchestra at Manchester Opera House as a teenager – and being blown away by the sound – one of Steve’s ambitions was always to play with the band. In March 2016 he got his first chance, when he deputised on the Baritone Sax chair. After many deputy appearances during 2016 on Alto 2 and Tenor 2, as well as the Baritone chair, Steve officially joined the band on Tenor 2 at the start of 2017 (SLO’s 50th Anniversary year), with his first gig as an official member coming in another of the UK’s very glamorous seaside towns – Skegness! He is delighted to be a member of this fabulous band.
